Hello Truth

I am working on being introspective on the stories I tell myself. For me, it is an interesting exercise because everyday I am trying to understand the stories my patients are telling themselves. I talk to them about what narratives they have created about their lift and their illnesses. Part of the challenge is bringing them down off their ladders and recreating a new story.

However I don’t often reflect on what ladders I have climbed. I appreciate the exercise we did at our last class and really looking at people that make me climb up the ladder quickly because of my experience. I tend to tell myself the same stories about these people and find all the evidence to verify my story. It has been helpful in coaching sessions and classes. I find it hard at times to hear and see a different version of the story and lay aside assumptions about certain people because their actions are consistent. With one of the individuals, I am trying to arrange a dinner to really sit still and actively listen. He’s one of my partners from a very different cultural background and I know that adds to my preconceptions about him.
