I can relate to each of the 4 Approaches to Long Term Practice from different areas of my life.
I dabbled for a millisecond in gardening. I wanted to turn my black thumb into a green one by studying the easiest vegetables to grow, purchasing everything necessary to begin my new hobby that would help with stress management, getting involved with something that would shut my brain off for moments of the day, etc…and everything died in their pots I purchased them in. It was short lived, to say the least! :-l
Years ago was a bit obsessive about making my family everything from scratch and not settling for anything less. The research time, shopping, prepping, cooking became more than I could handle. I definitely experienced burnout once I realized how my schedule did not permit to do such a thing.
My experience with public speaking has been one of a hacker type approach. I am willing to learn as I’m introduced to new challenges but it’s not an area I naturally push myself to. It is an area I’m not comfortable in yet willing to entertain, but thankful to have supportive friends that believe in me to push me to new challenges.
I would describe my desire to be a better leader for my team one of a mastery approach. I love serving the field, inspiring and empowering them, working alongside them, sharing wisdom with them and experiencing trials & tribulations with them. It never gets boring to me & I absolutely love my work! Each person I have the opportunity to meet, each situation I’m encounter with provides a new challenge, opportunity to learn and expand my craft. I could go on for days ;-)
Thank you,
Tammy Smith
