This week I had a chance to practice active listening with an employee who was conflicted around his professional future.  I found that by just listening, even with a few uncomfortable pauses where I think he expected me to speak, he was able to talk his way through his own internal conflict.   A few times I wanted to guide him, give feedback and even caught myself thinking about telling a story. Instead, I stopped and just focused on just. listening. It felt like the conversation was more productive for both of us even though he did most of the talking.
