12 Angry Men Observations

Good Morning!
I finally watched 12 Angry Men and was surprised by how much I enjoyed the film! I had never seen it and watching it through “Stagen Eyes” definitely made it more interesting than it would have been otherwise.
The first takeaway I had was how dangerous the Ladder of Inference and the “Story I am Telling Myself” can be. 11 of 12 jurors were convinced the boy was guilty as a result of these and were seconds away from sending him to execution. Which leads to my second takeaway of the importance of Active Listening. Henry Fonda led by example in the beginning of the movie by listening to the various jurors give their reasoning then he would calmly ask probing questions which ultimately led to jurors looking at the situation differently. You soon started to see other jurors engage in active listening, such as the Watchmaker who had been silent then shared his observations.
The last takeaway was Henry Fonda’s ability to communicate his intent in a way caused the impact he wanted. It took time, patience, sharing the facts vs. feelings, etc. and with each point he made, it resonated with 1 or more jurors and ultimately saved a boy’s life.
Good reminders as I lead my team, as well as work with others on the Executive team!
Have a great week!
