Dabbler, obsessive, hacker... Steve Riley 09 Jun 2017 20:30 UTC
I have definitely done all three of these but I think I live somewhere between the obsessive and hacker a lot of the time.

I can be a little bit of a Cliff Clavin at times for those of you that know that reference - sometimes I know a little about a lot. I'm fascinated by learning facts and am very curious. When a new topic arises, I do a bunch of research (obsessively) to learn as much as I can in a short period, get my fill, then move on to the next topic to fill the gap.

In other areas I am more of a hacker - this would be me and photography. I love having a quality camera and taking pictures (especially of my family and events). I learned a lot early on about exposure, shutter speed, aperture, etc. and bought a nice camera and lots of lenses. I even did some family (other than mine) portraits and made some money at my hobby, but never really progressed beyond that. I tend to learn a lot at first, plateau a bit, and then just tweak - but never really take it more than that.

I have recently taken my love of flying and photography and combined them by purchasing a nice camera drone. Have really enjoyed learning all about it and have talked about getting my commercial license to do paid photography and videos, but expect I will probably enjoy it as a hobby for family trips and events. Maybe I'll get to the next level this time...

Thank you,
Steve
