Similar to Jeff, over the last few weeks I have had some candid conversations with a few people. I think it is very helpful to start with an open-ended question. It did help me to center and focus on what they had to say and resulted in a productive and constructive conversation.
I highly recommend this practice!

Rob - That is lovely. Maui? We should all go to our happy place in times of stress.
I like to ask an open-ended question to get the other person talking and allow me to slow down and center, be aware of my breathing and focus on the outcome I want. I've had several difficult discussions over the past week and it definitely makes a difference and a more productive interaction.

I look at my wallpaper to recalibrate in meetings.
Probably looks like multi-tasking but it works well for me.

I tend to use recalibration in team meetings when I start feeling stressed or can tell the other person is stressed. It's also been useful when I'm switching gears when jumping from meeting to meeting and when points of contention come up. It helps me focus on what the goal is rather than falling into the drama triangle.
