I now see more similarities between Green and Orange then I expected to, and maybe that reflects an initial bias against “traditional” connotations of someone who is called “green”…which might not have been there if we used a different color naming convention.

And what if “Up” really meant “Down”?

Nathalia,

Today I read the supplement for Understanding People, which focuses on values relative to the mindsets, and so I decided to do what you did and label each of my values with a color. I’m pretty blown away that Orange is just a small part of my values, and there’s a ton of Green and Blue going on, really Green in almost all of them.

...Who, Who….Who am I? (falls to knees)

I find it easiest to identify with the orange mindset. All of this description resonates with me: “This worldview is strategic, ambitious, goal-oriented, competitive, and innovative. It emphasizes the scientific and rational and strives for success and autonomy.” I can be competitive, I value excellence, opportunity, competence, ambition, intelligence, progress, innovation, winning, and prosperity.

I can empathize with a lot of the blue and green core values. The following green mindset core values resonate with me: Personal growth, self-awareness, peace of mind, respect, equality, emotional well-being, quality of life. In the blue mindset core values I strongly identify with: order, structure, loyalty, self-discipline, self-sacrifice, truth, and morality. A lot of my core values overlap with these, for example: family (blue), relationships (green), wellness (green), integrity (blue)and impact (green).

For red, I can relate to the core values of independence, control, and respect. My freedom core value would resonate with a red mindset.

Although I think my primary mindset color is orange, interestingly, only one of my core values appears to overlap with orange, seek “challenge” – go for the next level. Well, you could even argue it is red, i.e. break from limits, independence.

I’ve struggled with this material more than any of the previous sections. Looking inward, I think like many in the group, I’d have to say a higher % of the attributes on the Orange list are reflective of who I am as a person than any of the others. Pretty much every attribute under Orange seems “positive” in nature and when I read those under Red, many of them, by most people’s standards, myself included, are viewed as “negative” (I don’t personally think it’s possible, certainly not long-term, to be successful at ORIX/Mariner if your “Hedonistic”, “Unconstrained by Consequence”, “Unrestrained”, or “Let the chips fall where they may”, etc.). But is it possible to be successful at ORIX/Mariner (or anywhere in our line of work) without having “Strength/toughness”, showing “Assertiveness” (in a professional manner), being “Action-oriented”, or without “taking-risks”? I know for my team you need to exhibit some of the characteristics in both Orange and Red to be successful. The Blue and Green categories strike me as more a reflection of Core Values and I definitely view myself as leaning Blue by a large margin, but this comes back to why I seem to struggle so much with this b/c of course I like to think of myself as “Tolerant”, having “Empathy for all beings”, and being “Self-aware”. At the end of the day, for me the lines between these categories are all blurred and I believe certain aspects from all of the different mindsets are applicable.

I consider my primary color to be Blue due to core values and the other characteristics. However, I would put it at 50% and Orange being next at 40%, and Green at 10%. The bottom line, I fit or identify more heavily with Blue (traditional values) and Orange (achievement, ambition, success).

Like Scott, I see myself as a strong Orange. I am driven by achievement and recognition, believe competition brings out my best, and focus on understanding and shaping incentives as a management technique.

I am drawn to Blue initially as a secondary mindset, but ultimately realize I tend to rebel against a hierarchy-for-hierarchy’s sake system, and instead believe in fairness (green) and individualism (seems red). I may ultimately follow the rules but hope to influence those rules over time. I also realize I tend to skew Blue/Red when in conflict with my children’s behavior (“because I said so”) and should not be surprised when that fails since the apple does not fall far from the tree.

I think I am very strongly an Orange mindset. Looking at the values associated with Orange, every single one could apply to me to varying degrees. Next most applicable is probably Green. Personal growth, self-awareness, rewarding relationships, environmentalism, acceptance, and empathy all resonate with me, although the idea of relativism does not. I have a bit of Blue, specifically doing the right thing, tradition, sacrificing the now for the future, and conscience, but strict adherence to arbitrary rules is against my mindset. I think I have almost no Red, except perhaps for the desire for independence.
