I had to have a tough conversation with someone this week for dropping the ball on a project. The ball drop was very out of character so there was a delicate aspect to the conversation. The SBI model was very helpful to me, as was the trust formula and ORIX values.
First, I asked for his side of the story and just listened (active listening plus making sure I wasn’t climbing the ladder).
Then I framed the situation from my perspective and his behavior’s impact on me (using elements of the trust formula, namely reliability). I also looped in the ORIX values and how they speak to the situation.
I can’t go into a lot of detail because of the sensitivity, but my view is the conversation was very positive and we addressed the issue.
