Regarding our breakout session this morning, one observation among our group was that we will likely never achieve a "perfect walk". This exercise is a process of evaluation, and I think success is best defined by heightened awareness of our core values, which will reduce the gap between the walk and talk.

I completely agree!

One other thing and then I'll be quiet. Proactive does not necessarily equal value. I may be proactive on a non-value task, which can be a bit of a waste. I'm learning that I need to combine the two.

Yes. Work/life balance has been a problem for me. By getting sucked into reactive and distraction things I have frankly shorted my core values. I'm forcing Attention Zone principles onto values to help walk the talk. My wife is pleased that I've actually been planning date night.

I like that, Jeff. Seems like overlaying the Attention Zones concept with your Values?

For walk the talk, I think I'm discovering something interesting. I have thought that my core values are in conflict at times - they require tradeoffs. For instance building/growing at work competes with outdoors/exercise competes with time with family competes with friends... What I've discovered with the values/walk the talk exercise is in fact I need to be trading off non-value effort. I can walk the talk better by having more boundaries on non-valued effort and being proactive on valued effort. Maybe it should be obvious but I've discovered I have "valued" with my time some things I don't really value. I'm also incorporating values into my weekly focusing.

One of the assignments this week was to post "Walk the Talk" insights over the past 3 weeks. The exercise of writing down or formalizing your core values was helpful for me. While I internally knew what my core values were, I believe I am more conscious of them now because of the practice sheet diagram depicting the "gap" between your walk and your talk. At least it makes me more aware of those times when I have that gap, and need to do better to close the gap.

The one word I seem to always use in these postings is aware or awareness. The concepts introduced have made me more aware, but what has been really helpful is reading or hearing about the experiences of others, especially as it relates to the DT and TED. I have an even-keel personality, and while I am not drama-free, the drama has been somewhat limited over these past 3 weeks. While this is good, I know there will be those times when it rears its head and I have to take it on. I believe I am better prepared to handle those issues given what I've learned from others in the class.

While I am novice on the ILP concepts, I have found that I've been more of a Challenger and Coach when it comes to drama facing my youngest daughter. She is a freshman, and is attending college on a softball scholarship. She is a Pitcher, plays OF, and is a power hitter. The Coach have red-shirted her this year, thus, she will not play this year. She is very competitive and driven and wants to play now. The mental game she struggles with is she is capable and ready to play today, travels with the team, suits out, does everything the other players do, but knowing she will not play this year takes its toll at times. So, I find myself encouraging and inspiring her, effectively challenging and coaching her through the mental valleys. There is a lot of satisfaction seeing her get through those mental blocks and getting stronger both mentally and physically as a college athlete.
