Understanding People as a Strength

One of the strengths that popped up for me after taking the Clifton Strengths eval was the ability to understand people and their emotions. This came as a bit of shock to me... I am normally a “suck it up and be tough” kind of boss, father, and husband.
Based on my answers I may be more in touch with others emotions maybe a little more than I thought. I do believe I understand people, their emotions, their challenges, their motivators but I do think where I sometimes struggle is empathy. I believe that we are all in control of our lives and that blaming someone else NEVER gets you closer to your goals and sometimes that comes off to others as a lack of care or understanding of their circumstances.
I truly believe the challenge for me isn’t understanding other people and what they’re going through, I believe the challenge is relating and just listening to other people and what they’re going through without giving instructions on what to change. I am a “fixer” and I’ve always been told (especially by my wife) I need to be a more intent listener and not always fix the problem. I am impressed by the eval and its a great reminder to be self aware of the shortcomings and more intent on listening, understanding, and fixing only when asked for help on the given situation.
