Dabbler/Hacker at Different Stages in Life

To me, I go through the different stages of dabbler, hacker, obsessive, mastery with different areas of my life as I get older and my kids get older.
I played golf in high school and I was a hacker for sure - I played because I was good enough to be one of the top 5 golfers but had zero interest in being the best. After college and getting married I started dabbling in golf again and it became competitive with my other friends to a point I was now obsessed and wanted to be the best one of our friend group. Then....kids. I have played two rounds of golf this year.
Same with something as simple as lawn care. When I was in college I never spent half a second admiring a lawn. Now, as I get older, I am competitive about lawn care and I want my friends to envy my lawn when they come over for a cookout so I spend time caring for my lawn (something that would’ve blown my mind only 5 years ago).
The biggest difference at this stage of my life is business. I am striving for that mastery level every single day. Just 3 years ago I was an employee who definitely cared but not to the degree of being a “master” running a business. I am assuming over the next 5 years certain interests will change from dabbler to obsessive and vice versa but it is definitely interesting to be aware as the stages come and go.
