Lawrence,
Getting out of my office has proven to be critical. We built this insight into the design of our new office space, which we just moved into a few months ago. My office now has my assistant directly in front of me as a gatekeeper, which
helps a lot with unannounced visitors. But I did not want to wall myself off – I didn’t like the optics, which would have been incongruent with the open, collaboration-oriented, flexible space that we designed. The solution is that we created a bunch of different
areas in the office where individuals or small groups can get out of their offices to accomplish what they need to accomplish. My favorites of these are the small call rooms. We have four:

I definitely have found myself distracted when in the office. I actually work better from home I disturbed, but not productive for the office. I like the idea of grabbing a room that’s not my fishbowl office, block off time on my calendar
and get things done!

I have this experience too, Matt. I’m generally proactive on airplanes – either working or renewing.
Looking over today and yesterday, I can say it was mostly proactive – in part because I reduced distractions from email.

After tracking my Attention Management Zones (with tick marks) for 3 days this week. I found that 80% of my attention was spent in distraction, waste or reactive. One trick I tried today was to work in a conference room, the time flipped
to 80% in the proactive zone. SO one day a trend does not make but I found it quite interesting that just moving my location and not being near my desk phone had that much of an impact. Next week I’m on airplanes so hope to be locked into proactive most of
the time.. have a great weekend everyone!
