Thanks Brock for your insights. I watched the Miracle today as well. First time for me!

Couple HPT insights that stood out:

- Coach had a crystal clear vision from the beginning about the goal and the types of players he wanted/didn’t want. ‘looking for the right players…not the best’

- Interesting was that his stated goal was for the team to be the best conditioned team in the Olympics. A goal within control/reach while knowing that would likely lead to the gold.

- Coach was smart in using the team fight in the early part as an opportunity to call a breakdown…and ask for a commitment. ‘we will start becoming a team right now!”

- Stunning example of HPT was when the 4 players confronted coach about his personnel decisions (outside of the bus). The players truly felt part of the team/family as they had the confidence and courage to voice that concern directly to coach.

- Several examples of productive conflict/challenger situations

I also found it interesting how the players always referred to the coach as ‘Herb; and not as coach. Not sure actually how to interpret that…

I watched Miracle today and am overflowing with Patriotism.

I have watched Miracle several times over the years. It was really cool to watch it with the intention seeking the elements of High Performance Teamwork.

This way proved to be a really cool learning experience.

What stood out for me was how the goal: put together a team and win gold in the olympics, became more important and bigger as world events unfolded prior to the olympics. The various elements of HPT were prevalent throughout the movie.

Hard work

Discipline.

Keep the goal in mind.

Choosing the right players for the team, not based on ability alone, but on their ability to work together and more importantly, what they had inside.

When the right people are on the team, the necessary elements required to have a high performance team are facilitated.

None the less, there is a lot of hard work and a process to go through before the level of high performance as a team can be achieved.

Keeping the goal in mind, the coach was masterful at helping the players navigate various obstacles to HPT as they moved through the development process. It is only by working closely together that trust can be developed. There must be productive conflict as well. He let them fight when they needed to fight, and he worked their butts off when they needed a common “enemy”.

I think it was his ability to never lose focus on the goal combined with his sheer desire to achieve that goal that helped him make the hard decisions even when everyone was telling him that he was wrong.

With the right people, egos were kept in check. with the right coach, accountability was held. Coach also had a keen eye for attention to the details, not only in his players, but in studying the other teams that they were going to play. He did his homework.

Some of the other HPT “flags”:

Although the coach was focused on the goal, he was also humble enough that he defined it in such a way that 20 years from now, he wanted the players to know they left everything on the ice in the Olympics.

You knew the team was going to be successful as a team when they started identifying themselves as the team, not as players who were playing for the same team. And when they started calling themselves a family.

Mutual accountability developed and flourished as the team won together and lost together.

In the end, I was reaffirmed with the importance of the coach or leader of the team in the success of the team. Without a clear and focused leader, the individual potential can not be sourced or developed, and the many elements of HPT would not come together.

HP Teams are built by intention, not by accident.

Again, Miracle is a powerful movie and this lesson was an enjoyable learning experience!!

One of my all time favorite movies.

It stirs up so many emotions in me - every other scene is a tear jerker for me. I am sure its the combination of the music along with the cinematography and with the story line and acting that just stirs up my emotions. This is just one of those classic films that highlight what ordinary men can do given extraordinary circumstances. Just a superb movie!

It reminds me of Margaret Mead's famous quote, "Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has."

	Random thoughts and insights:

Herb Brooks was a hockey player who was the last player to be cut from the USA Hocket Team in the 1960 Olympics. That team won the gold medal. He actually approached the coach who cut him after the Olympics and told he had made the right decision.

I think he was possessed, driven to win the "Gold Medal". I think it consumed his whole life. His entire life purpose was to win the Olympic gold medal. He didnt do it as a player so he had to do it as a coach. He came up with a winning formula for building a team and believed chemistry was the most important element of the team, not individual talent. He had months to train his new team, not years. The best team in the world who he would have to beat were the Russians and they had played together and won the gold medal for over 15 years.

Herb was an introvert but "insanely" confident of his strategy. Everyone around him thought he was nuts - even his assistant coach - but he did not waiver.

Interesting to see the Drama Triangle and the Hero's Journey themes play throughout the movie.

Was it a miracle or was it preparation meeting opportunity?

	Quotes:

"I am your coach. I am not your friend."

"Everyone of those boys were picked for a specific reason." (Very intentional!)

"Skating, passing, FLOW, creativity... That is what this team is all about."

"Ever since I stopped playing (hockey) I wanted to coach this team." (Lofty goal)

"The legs feed the wolf." (Practice, preparation)

"We seem to find each other and make things happen." (The Cone Heads referring to their synergy playing together.)

"You cant win on talent alone. You dont have enough talent."

"Win, lose or tie you will play like champions."

"This cannot be a team of common men. Common men go nowhere. You have to be uncommon."

"No one has ever worked hard enough to skate with the Soviet team for an entire game. Gentlemen, we are going to work hard enough."

"For the first time the majority of our people believe the next 5 years will be worst than the past 5 years." President Carter (sound familiar?)

"Great moments are born from great opportunities."

"Tonight we are the greatest hockey team in the world."

"You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. You were meant to be here tonight."

"Two days later the USA team defeated Finland, coming from behind once again.

	the miracle was made complete
my boys defeated Finland to win the gold medal
	coming from behind once again
as i watched them out there celebrating on the ice
i realized that Patty had been right
it was a lot more than a hockey game
not only for those who watched it
but for those who played in it
I've often been asked over the years since lake placid
what was the best moment for me
it was here - the sight of 20 young men of different backgrounds
Now standing as one (High Performance Team)
Yong men willing to sacrifice so much of themselves
	All four an unknown
A few years later the US began using pro athletes for a dream teams

I always find the term ironic b/c now that we have dream teams
We seldom ever get the dream
	But on one weekend

As America and the world watched

A group of remarkable men gave the nation what it needed most.

The chance one one night, not only to dream but the chance once again to believe.

Comments about one of the best Team movies of all time:

	*	All-star teams fail because they rely solely on Individual talent. The Soviets win because they take that talent and they use it inside a system that is designed for the betterment of the team.
	*	I'm not looking for the best players I'm looking for the right ones
	*	During training Coach made the team skate sprints or suicides (can't call it that anymore…) and made them keep skating even after they were falling down and puking…

		*	At the end of every 5th or 6th sprint Coach would ask a player: "Who do you play for?" the player would name his college and team name

		*	Finally Coach let them stop when one of the captains said: "I'm Mike Erizioni, from Winthrop Mass - I play for The United States Of America"

		*	He let them stop because they got it - they were part of a team now, not individuals

	*	Again, Again - Oslow Norway; guys not working during game but they tied 3-3; the Whole Team had to pay the price – not just one or two individuals.
	*	Coach to players: "Think you can win on Talent alone? You don't have enough talent…" letting them know they need to work as a Team and not just rely on individual talents
	*	Coach to players: "Name on the front of the shirt is a hell of a lot more important than the one on the back" letting them know the team is more important than the individual
	*	Individuals vs. Team

		*	Reporter asked to speak to Jim Craig - the Goalie - Coach Brooks says "this is not an individual effort, we're a team on the ice and off the ice.." Reporters Criticized Coach Brooks saying he wouldn't let them talk to the team members because he wanted the spotlight on himself. Next press conference he did not show up.

As a Team Leader/Coach at work, Father of 6 and "retired" Coach of youth Lacrosse, it doesn't get better than this movie; If you haven't seen it, watch it and if you have kids and haven't seen it with them, make them watch it, if you coach youth sports of any kind, have your entire team watch it together.
